FAS magazine marks 1 year with editor in chief gracing May cover.
Editorial – FRESH
Photographer – Taz Jariwalla (TJP Studios)
MUA/Styling/Model – Shellina Ebrahim
Written by – Salma Blair
In the May cover, which has been said to bring to mind the famous shot of Marilyn Monroe in a white dress being blown by wind from a scene of ‘Seven Year Itch’, FAS magazine’s editor in chief Shellina Ebrahim revealed that having her on the cover was in fact not her idea. Shellina explains that, she had wanted to have an edgy swimwear story modeled by a new face and homegrown beauty for the spring cover and editorial. While the model was getting her make-up prepped for the bikini shoot, fashion photographer Taz Jariwalla encouraged Shellina to slip into a white dress and stand in front of the camera to test the lights. The strong wind blowing from the sea, combined with her playful nature produced a spontaneous pose right from the first shot and the rest is history. As to what makes this cover shot so interesting, digital marketer Abu Msuya reveals, is that “it looks like it just happened and someone had a camera to capture the moment.” What makes her fascinating is not only her striking features and spontaneity. Also, her daring attitude and creative spirit taking the industry to fresh new heights. Her determination to improve Tanzania’s fashion industry by inspiring others and pushing her work to reach standards of major International fashion magazines has proven positive. Shellina launched FAS magazine exactly a year ago with the objective to bring the world of fashion and lifestyle home to Tanzanians as well as share with the world what Tanzania has to offer in terms of fashion and lifestyle. Within the one year, she has created tremendous value for major brands such as Peroni to say the least. In the meanwhile, she has been modest and reluctant to have herself on the cover of her own magazine. Shellina explains that, “I did’t want to have myself on the cover to avoid FAS being about me. It’s about the world of fashion and lifestyle in and outside Tanzania. Since launching, I’ve received numerous requests from inside and outside the country to feature myself in some of the editorials we do for the mag. Once, FAS got reviewed by someone from Vogue who said that this magazine has tremendous potential and to reach it’s vision quickly, it needs a backbone.” By backbone they meant a face and a voice to associate the magazine with. Meaning Shellina should embrace her role as an editor and put herself more out there on FAS. After all, she plays a huge part as an influencer in the Tanzanian fashion industry and seeing her face and her writing from first voice more often is not necessarily a brag. So by popular request and to celebrate its first year, Shellina Ebrahim graces the May cover of FAS magazine. Posing for international photographer Taz in this fashion editorial called ‘FRESH’, she wears Tanzanite jewels to go with a white dress that has a side slit and one shoulder designed by herself. This was the first time Taz had worked with FAS. You will be seeing more of Shellina and Taz’s work in future issues of FAS. The bikini shoot originally meant for spring publication will be posted in the summer.
